Governor Kate Brown:
President Trump’s recent Executive Orders that divide and discriminate do not reflect the values enshrined in the U.S. Constitution or the principles we stand for as Oregonians.
In Oregon, where thousands have fought for and demanded equality, we can not and will not retreat. As Governor, I will uphold the civil and human rights of all who call Oregon home. My staff is studying the recent Executive Orders to determine what effects they may have on Oregonians, and I will explore options to keep Oregon a safe place for everyone. I am also in contact with the Port of Portland and local authorities and am prepared to assist if necessary.
Now, more than ever, we must stand together, guided by the enduring belief in freedom, liberty, and justice for all, and make our voices heard.
I’ve never been more proud of, or more anxious for, our democracy than I am today.
Witnessing the nationwide responses, watching live reports, and reading comments and commentary about Trump’s actions — which are clearly in violation of the Constitution — I’m filled with both pride and rage.
Pride at the humanity and compassion being demonstrated by my fellow citizens. Pride in the Governors and legislators who are standing up to this blatant attempt to bully those who are already living under great duress in their home countries. Pride in all who work for justice. Pride at the passion that is motivating people of good will across the country, no matter our religion or political affiliations.
Rage at this blatant attempt to disrupt legally codified procedures for admitting immigrants into the U.S. Rage at what this says to the world about our values. Rage at the fact that these invalid executive orders empower actual terrorists.
Donald Trump, you are a fool, a pawn, and a puppet.
